As The Ocean Race speeds across the Atlantic from Newport to Aarhus, a world of meticulous logistics and tireless organization lies behind the scenes, culminating in the creation of vibrant event villages. The Danish city of Aarhus is just one of nine iconic international stops on The Ocean Race 2022-23.
While the round-the-world race celebrates the endurance and skill of the sailing teams, a vast number of people on land make this global phenomenon a reality. As the Official Clothing Supplier, join us as we uncover the work behind bringing The Ocean Race to life and take a look at Aarhus itself and the sustainability efforts on site.
At the heart of The Ocean Race lies a logistical marvel that spans continents. The 2023 edition covers around 32,000 nautical miles and involves eight stopovers, plus a fly-by in Kiel, before culminating in Genova, Italy.
The 14th edition of The Ocean Race is unique as it both starts and ends in the Mediterranean, with 11 teams still in the running. Months of meticulous planning and coordination are required to ensure seamless transitions between race legs. From arranging supplies to coordinating port facilities and managing infrastructure, a team of organizers and experts work tirelessly behind the scenes to transform the race into a global spectacle.
Aarhus, Denmark, recognized as one of Time's "World's Greatest Places of 2023", has a storied history as an experienced and innovative host of international sailing events. Hosting the Sailing World Championships in 2018, as well as the 2017-18 Ocean Race Fly-By, showcased Aarhus' expertise in delivering world-class events.
The opening of The Ocean Village in Aarhus on 29 May 2023 will be marked by a massive maritime festival, welcoming at least 400,000 visitors. The fleet is currently due to arrive on 30 May, but their actual arrival depends on conditions. The city's rich maritime heritage, combined with its warm Danish hospitality, creates an unforgettable atmosphere. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, explore the attractions, and witness the fusion of international sailing with the vibrant spirit of Aarhus.
Aarhus ranks third on the index of the world’s most sustainable tourist destinations and is a beacon of sustainability. With this in mind, The Ocean Race in Aarhus is shining a spotlight on environmental stewardship. Innovative exhibitors and entrepreneurs converge on Sustainability Island, Pier 2 in Aarhus Harbor, with a showcase of solutions for a more sustainable world, including a community dome garden to encourage biodiversity, art installations made from upcycled plastic, and “Reuse, Repair” workshops.
From renewable energy installations to waste reduction initiatives, Aarhus exemplifies how an event village can be a role model for sustainable practices. Over 400 volunteers will participate in the event. Students at the local Business Academy Aarhus contributed green ideas while collaborative efforts between local authorities, event organizers, and sponsors like Helly Hansen amplify the commitment to creating a sustainable event village that inspires visitors and sailors alike.
The Ocean Race is not only a thrilling test of skill and endurance for the sailing teams but also a platform to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility. With a strong commitment to sustainable practices, the race aims to raise awareness about the pressing issues facing our oceans.

As the teams sail the approximately 3,500 nautical miles from Newport to Aarhus, they embark on a journey filled with challenges and triumphs. The transatlantic leg demands unwavering teamwork, resilience, and strategic decision-making. Sailors battle treacherous weather conditions while navigating the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean.
Behind the scenes, crews work tirelessly to maintain their yachts, refine race tactics, and foster the team spirit that is so crucial to success. Since 1973, The Ocean Race has been a showcase of the power of teamwork and preparation, both on and off the boat. The Ocean Race captivates the world with its sailing, but behind the scenes lies a world of meticulous logistics, sustainability, and collaboration.
