Favorite Spots: The Shipwreck Coast

June is Open Mountain Month, and to warm up, we did a quick tour of the office to learn about our outdoor-loving colleagues' favorite spots in the mountains. Here, Social Media Manager Jacqueline Stoesser shares her favorite thru-hike.

What is your favorite spot in the mountains?

The Shipwreck Coast Thru-Hike in Washington State.

Why is it your favorite?

This was by far one of the most challenging and beautiful backpacking trips I’ve ever been on. It was my first ever thru-hike and my first-ever hike along a coastline that required us to travel based on when the ocean tides were low!

How would you describe the spot?

Warm, cold, sandy, rugged, lush, and windy, we experienced every possible condition aside from snow during our Shipwreck Coast adventure. Hiking along 20+ miles of the Washington coastline provided such a range of conditions in the weather and landscape that it kept us surprised at every mile marker.

Is there a story about the spot you want to share?

The Shipwreck Coast thru-hike is a special adventure because only a select number of people are allowed to travel every year, as the route requires permits for camping spots along the coast. We were extremely fortunate to secure permits for a mid-July adventure, and the weather turned out to be stunning PNW summer conditions throughout the entire trip.

This thru-hike requires a lot of coordination, ranging from a shuttle drop-off at the North or South end of the trail to analyzing the tide charts to see when you’ll be able to pass through many spots of the trail that are covered by feet of water when the tides are high. With careful planning, this route is one of the most beautiful and rewarding adventures I’ve ever been on. Not to mention, unique! Rarely do you need to hike for miles on top of slimy, algae and seaweed-covered tidepool rocks while being aware of recent bear sightings and whales washed ashore! Hiking poles are a must-have for this adventure.
