Beverly Lake

Favorite Spots: Beverly Lake

June is Open Mountain Month, and to warm up, we did a quick tour of the office to learn about our outdoor-loving colleagues' favorite spots in the mountains. Here, Marketing Manager Courtney Tennant shares her favorite spot from Whistler, BC.

What is your favorite spot in the mountains?

My favorite spot in the mountains is a little place called "Beverly Lake," near Whistler, BC.

Why is it your favorite?

This tiny glacial lake (often called a "tarn") holds a place in my heart because this is where my husband proposed! We waded through the freezing water (being careful to stay atop the underwater boulders) to a small island in the middle of the lake, and after some adorable fumbling, he popped the question. This was the perfect way to begin our journey together, as the mountains are as much a part of our lives as the air in our lungs.

Some of the appeal of this area stems from the fact that it can be challenging to get to.  After 8km and 850 meters of elevation gain on an established trail, you must rely on route-finding skills for 1-2 hours through the thick alpine scrub, crossing boulder fields and avoiding cliffs to access this spot. My husband and I try to come back to this place every few years on the anniversary of the proposal.

How would you describe the spot?

This is a gorgeous, sub-alpine lake in the valley just beyond Rainbow Mountain. As it sits at a high elevation, it can be exposed to wind (which is welcome when the bugs are hungry), but on a hot day, the frigid water is a welcome relief.

The lake is clear and clean, and the surrounding peaks offer hours of exploring beyond the water's edge. The weather can change instantly, and Mother Nature's power is just one reason I love the mountains so much. The wilderness makes me feel small and humble and, at the same time, accomplished—knowing that each of my own footsteps has enabled me to conquer so many summits.

Is there a story about the spot you want to share?

When we first accessed this spot years ago, it was quite unknown. These days, you might have a front seat to an intimate wedding ceremony—such is the beauty of the area.
