The ocean tells stories through every wave, every wind shift, and every mile sailed. Just as sea captains have documented their voyages in logbooks for centuries, today's sailors continue this tradition—but with a deeper purpose. The Sailor's Logbook captures the voices of professional sailors who witness ocean changes firsthand and are taking action to protect what they love most.
This mini-series features conversations with sailors Pip and Scott from Canada Ocean Racing – Be Water Positive, a team competing in The Ocean Race Europe 2025.
Sharing their observations of our changing seas and their dedication to protecting the ocean, Pip and Scott join a tradition of ocean documentation that spans centuries. From sea captains' logbooks to marine biologists' field notes, those who spend time on the water have always recorded their observations. Their stories matter because they come from direct experience. When sailors describe changes in weather patterns, pollution levels, or marine life behavior, they're reporting from the front lines of climate change. Their testimony carries the weight of expertise earned through years of professional ocean racing.
As we face the urgent need to protect our oceans, voices like these help build the case for immediate action. Every story shared, every observation documented, and every call to action adds momentum to the global movement for ocean conservation.
British offshore sailor Pip Hare is a two-time Vendée Globe competitor and renowned for her resilience. During the 2024 race, she navigated 800 nautical miles to safety under a jury rig after a dismasting, exemplifying her determination and composure.
Scott Shawyer, president and skipper of Canada Ocean Racing – Be Water Positive, represents a different path to ocean conservation. After 25 years building a successful engineering company, he's dedicated himself to competitive sailing and water advocacy through the Be Water Positive campaign.
Drawing inspiration from The Ocean's Logbook—a global initiative collecting personal stories to advocate for protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030—we've created The Sailor's Logbook. Here we will continue to feature interviews with Helly Hansen ambassadors as they compete in The Ocean Race Europe 2025 and beyond, documenting their experiences and amplifying their commitment to ocean protection.
