Where Does “Genoa” Get Its Name?

There are various theories about the origins of the city's name. While one suggests it may come from the Latin word for "knee" (genu; plural, genua), another intriguing possibility is its connection to the god Janus. Just like Janus, Genoa reveals two distinct faces — one gazing at the vast sea and the other towards the majestic mountains. It's no wonder that Genoa has such a rich seafaring history when the water is omnipresent.

What To Do in Genoa?

From the famous aquarium, which is home to hundreds of marine species, to the world-class art museums and galleries, there is something for everyone in Genoa. That's without mentioning the incredible Italian cuisine, which in Genoa ranges from pesto to "pansotti" (a local type of ravioli). Don't miss seeing the Old Port (Porto Antica) and some of the local sights. There are endless piazzas and palaces to choose from, and incredible examples of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic architecture. Check out the following spots:

  1. The Ducal Palace

  2. San Lorenzo Cathedral

  3. Church of San Matteo

  4. Palazzo San Giorgio.

The sheer number of visitors and the commercial boost that The Ocean Race brings to any host city is immense — and the atmosphere is certainly not to be missed.

The winning team does not collect any prize money. Still, the Ocean Race Trophy looms large in the world of ocean sailing. It has become a symbol of the many sacrifices made by sailors in one of the greatest challenges in professional sports. The Trophy is made from aluminum and silver plate and consists of rings that are engraved with the year, the course, and the name of the winning boat and skipper of that edition of the race. The first ring represents the inaugural race in 1973-74, and a new circle is added for every new edition. Currently, the Trophy stands over 70 centimeters high and weighs around nine kilos. Ultimately, it will become an engineering challenge like the Race itself. Copyright: Sailing Energy / The Ocean Race

Now, both the IMOCAs and the VO65s are arriving in Genoa, concluding an extraordinary adventure on the high seas. This version of The Ocean Race has been particularly unique as it both started and ended in the Mediterranean.
