Overcoming Self-Doubt and Embracing Nature

The story of a Norwegian People’s Aid Volunteer

Growing up in the breathtaking landscapes of Neverdal, Meløy, Ole Martin Heløy always felt a strong connection to nature. Surrounded by forests and coastlines, he enjoyed playing outside and exploring the wilderness. However, his relationship with the mountains was fraught with self-doubt and a lack of knowledge on how to safely explore them.

“I always felt some kind of attraction towards nature, but I didn't really know how to venture further out into it,” Ole Martin admits.

After joining the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) as a volunteer, Ole Martin gained the tools, knowledge, and confidence necessary to conquer his insecurities and embrace the mountains. NPA not only provided him with essential skills but also introduced him to a community where he felt a sense of belonging.

Ole Martin recounts, “After I became a member of the Norwegian People's Aid, I learned a lot about how to explore nature in a safe way and gain confidence. I've been out a lot more since then.”

In order to truly feel at home in the mountains, Ole Martin had to overcome his self-doubt and expand his knowledge of proper equipment and safety measures. This journey allowed him to fully appreciate the freedom and tranquility offered by the mountains.

“The open mountain to me is the freedom to go wherever I want, with little or no distractions from the world around me,” he reflects.

Now an experienced mountain explorer, he emphasizes the importance of being prepared, trusting one's equipment, and recognizing that accidents can happen to anyone. As a search and rescue member, he believes that the mountains should be accessible to everyone, as long as they are equipped with the right knowledge and tools.

I think the mountain is open for everyone. That's why we're always here.

The mountains have taught him not only about nature but also about himself. Overcoming his self-doubt and gaining experience have led to personal growth and a deeper understanding of his own capabilities.

“There's nothing stopping me from going out and exploring the mountains. But I needed to take some steps to get to where I am today,” he shares.

Ole Martin's story is a testament to the transformative power of nature and the importance of pushing past personal barriers. By embracing challenges and seeking knowledge, he has discovered a newfound confidence and a passion for exploring the inspiring landscapes that surround him.
