The Ocean Race 2022-2023

Newport, Rhode Island – an iconic Ocean Race stopover

Few cities in the world are as closely linked to the sport of sailing as Newport, Rhode Island. Renowned for its world class sailing, the City-by-the-Sea has also become a natural part of The Ocean Race, playing host to the 4th stopover of The Ocean Race 2022-23 from May 13–21.

The Ocean Race has found a recurring home in Newport, with the city's third consecutive stopover in the 2022-23 edition. Hosted by Sail Newport, the event has had a significant economic and tourism impact on the community. In 2015, over 137,000 people visited the race village at Fort Adams, followed by over 100,000 in 2018.

A welcome stopover

For The Ocean Race sailors, the Newport stopover offers a much-needed respite and opportunity for rejuvenation before embarking on the demanding transatlantic Leg 5 journey from Newport to Aarhus, Denmark, as their shore crews diligently prepare their boats for the challenge ahead.

The city is beloved for its charming colonial and New England architecture, bustling waterfront filled with eateries, galleries, and boutiques, and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. A world-class sailing destination, Newport is home to the 11th Hour Racing Team and has hosted other premier events like the America's Cup.

The 2015 Newport stopover also marked the inception of The Ocean Race's sustainability program, which expanded to all stopovers during the 2017-18 edition.

This year, Newport is hosting two fleets for the first time, the IMOCA 60s, foiling boats which push the limits of technology, as well as the one-design VO65 class, which produced the closest race in history in the 2017-18 edition.
