Preparing for an ocean race is no easy feat. It requires a lot of planning and preparation, especially when it comes to what clothes to bring. In this guide, Annie Lush from GUYOT environnement - Team Europe shares her tips and tricks on how she packed for Leg 3 of The Ocean Race 2022-23.
Please note: A few days after recording this video, Annie and the rest of GUYOT environnement - Team Europe experienced what all sailors fear during an ocean race. Just as they dipped into the zone below 40 degrees south, around 600 nautical miles from the start of the third leg of The Ocean Race, the crew noticed cracking and movement in the hull structure below the laminate. The damage was so serious that a safe continuation of the stage from Cape Town to Itajaí, Brazil, was not possible. They decided to suspend racing and return to Cape Town. We are happy the whole crew is safe and can't wait to see them back in the race soon.
Here's a closer look at the gear Annie talks about:
The most important part of the clothing is the waterproof gear. Annie recommends the Modular Smock, which offers options to zip off or zip on the hood and the collar. The trousers designed for ocean sailing are the most waterproof and durable design we offer, and they also have built-in knee pads.
Pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional protective sailing smocks, the Ægir adapts to fluctuating temperatures and foul weather. With a removable hood and length, paired with the unique YKK® AQUA SEAL® waterproof ventilation zippers, you can adjust it to any condition. The ÆGIR Modular Smock top is built with professional input, pushing sailing gear to the next level of performance and versatility. Sailor Thomas Coville tested our smock on the most Modern Ultima class Trimarans and Foiling Imoca Class sailboats.
We used a 5-layer construction finished with super strong HELLY TECH® Professional fabric to create this high-end, waterproof and breathable smock top for ocean races. We added waterproof rubber neck and cuffs providing maximum protection from the elements at sea. You can adjust the length, waist, and pack away the hood for max mobility.
Designed for races, these trousers are sturdy enough to protect you in changeable offshore and coastal sea environments. We used 5-ply construction – finishing with super strong HELLY TECH® Professional fabric – for extremely waterproof, breathable and durable overalls. The reinforced seat and knees, plus high back panel, enhance stormproof protection.
Annie packs merino wool base layers for sailing, because the natural fibers wick sweat away much better and dry quickly. She has different thicknesses of merino for different parts of the body, and she recommends layering.
Annie recommends using fleece for the next layer. She likes it because it dries quickly and is comfortable to wear. She has two layers of fleece, a standard one and a thicker one. In addition, she brings a gilet to add some core warmth without limiting movement, and when it gets really cold and wet, she puts on a midlayer jacket.
This super-lightweight women's half zip design is a must-have. With great year-round versatility, this lightweight brushed fleece top works well for both sports and casual wear.
This super-lightweight full zip design is a must-have. With great full-year versatility, this lightweight brushed women's fleece vest works well for both sports and casual wear.
The Women's Daybreaker Fleece Pant for women is a cozy fleece pant in an active modern fit. The warm, breathable and comfortable Polartec® classic 100 fleece material construction is a year-round companion for any outdoor, sailing or ski enthusiast.
If you take one jacket on your next sailing trip, go for our favorite marine midlayer. Designed with our proprietary HELLY TECH® Protection technology—plus fleece lining—the all-purpose Crew is breathable while keeping you warm and dry. We enhanced it with the little things that count: a warming collar, adjustable cuffs, and dual hand pockets with brushed lining.
When it comes to what she describes as her "hardcore Southern Ocean gear", Annie has ski gloves from Helly Hansen, thick diving gloves for on-deck work, balaclavas, and neck buffs. It's all about ensuring she stays warm and dry in the harsh and unpredictable conditions the journey serves up.
Polartec® Classic 100g Microfleece lightweight stretch neck.
A 100% merino neck warmer with HH logo. This HH Merino 2.0 Neck Gaiter is crafted with 100% Merino wool, for a softer touch, thermoregulation, and odor control, and features a HH logo. Made with certified ZQ wool.
Created using our patented HELLY TECH® Professional technology, the Swift HT Gloves perfect for your alpine adventures. Equipped with asymmetrical cuffs and a webbing pull tab, the Swift HT Mitten will keep you protected and comfortable on the slopes. Featuring touch capable index fingers and thumbs, send text messages without getting cold fingers.
A dependable, waterproof dry bag is a must-have for boat life. With a volume of 43 liters, this is our most spacious and sturdy dry bag to keep your essentials safe in bad weather and rough seas. The Ocean Dry Bag has extra-strong 420D nylon with waterproof TPU backing. We reinforced the watertight properties by using highly durable and leak-proof radio-frequency welded seams. It closes with a secure roll-top and buckle. A removable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry when loading and unloading the boat. Although designed for water sports, this dry bag is useful anytime you need extra protection from the elements. Roll-top dry bags do not provide waterproof protection if completely submerged.
Annie keeps the extra items to a minimum because weight and space are limited onboard. She brings a small towel, a wet notebook, a marker pen, some red and white tape, sunscreen, her iPod, a head torch, a spare hairband, and her sunglasses. In addition, she packs a plush toy unicorn belonging to her daughter – a keepsake to remind her of home – plus a lucky $2 bill from a friend, and some letters from her friends. These items in particular are less about practicality and more about morale – little personal reminders that can come in handy when things get extra tough on the ocean.
Preparing for The Ocean Race requires a lot of planning and preparation, especially when it comes to packing. The right sailing gear is imperative for any leg of the journey, especially one as diverse and challenging as the Southern Ocean. As a seasoned professional, Annie Lush knows layering and using the highest quality waterproof gear is vital, and bringing personal items to keep you motivated and inspired goes a long way too.

Olympic competitor, two-time circumnavigator, and four-time match race world champion: Annie Lush is a prime example of an all-rounder in sailing – but not just sailing. Born in Poole on the south coast of England, the 42-year-old also won the famous rowing race against Oxford University during her university days in Cambridge. She then switched to offshore sailing, participating in two Volvo Ocean Races. In 2014/15, she was part of Team SCA, the first all-female team to win a leg of the Ocean Race. In the 2017/18 edition, she sailed with Team Brunel and is now aiming for her third world race.
